BIG4 Mackay Blacks Beach Holiday Park
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard “holiday park,” I was expecting something pretty basic, maybe even a bit dated. But BIG4 Mackay Blacks Beach actually surprised me in the best way possible. It’s tucked away on Bourke Street, which means you’re close enough to everything in Mackay without dealing with the main road chaos, and honestly, that location works perfectly. You’re literally a few minutes from Blacks Beach (hence the name), and I mean, once you see that stretch of coastline, you’ll get why people keep coming back here.
What really struck me about this place is how they’ve managed to feel both family-friendly and genuinely relaxing at the same time – you know how some holiday parks can be all screaming kids and chaos? Well, there’s definitely families here, but the layout is smart enough that you can find your quiet spots too. The facilities are actually impressive for a 4-star setup; the pool area doesn’t feel like an afterthought, and the cabins I stayed in were way more comfortable than I expected. Air conditioning that actually works (crucial in Queensland), decent kitchen setup if you want to cook, and the beds were surprisingly good. I mean, I’ve stayed in city hotels with worse mattresses, honestly.
The staff here seem to actually know the area, which is rarer than you’d think. When I asked about good fishing spots, the guy at reception didn’t just hand me a generic brochure – he told me about the rock wall near the marina and mentioned the best times to go based on the tides. That kind of local knowledge makes a difference, especially if you’re not from around here. Parking’s never an issue, which is brilliant because you’ll definitely want a car to explore the area properly. The beaches north of here toward Seaforth are absolutely worth the drive, and you’re close enough to the Mackay city center when you need proper shops or restaurants. The only minor thing I’d mention is that the wifi can be a bit patchy in some of the cabins – not a deal-breaker, but if you’re planning to work remotely, maybe check your connection when you arrive. Overall though, for the price point and that 8.9 rating, I can see exactly why this place books out during school holidays. It’s one of those spots that just works – comfortable, well-run, and in a location that gives you options without the tourist trap feeling.

Love the location. It was great waking up and hearing the Kookaburras and Rainbow Lorikeets while sitting on the balcony having my morning coffee. The Beach was just a very short walk through the park and it was picturesque. Our room was located by the pool and the splash park which the kids loved and I didn't have to go far to watch them.
