First Impressions
When I first spotted Berth 6 on Upton Lake, Upton-upon-Severn Home on Water, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from a houseboat stay. But pulling up to East Waterside and seeing this four-star floating home bobbing gently on the water — well, it immediately felt like something special. The whole setup is surprisingly sophisticated for what you might imagine a boat accommodation to be. You know what struck me most? The complete silence except for the occasional lap of water against the hull.
Location & Setting
Upton-upon-Severn sits right where the River Severn opens into this peaceful lake, and the location really is everything here. I mean, you’re literally living on the water with unobstructed views in every direction. The parking situation is actually brilliant — there’s free private parking right on site, which honestly takes away any stress about leaving your car. Couples seem to absolutely love it here (they’ve rated the location 9.8), and I can see why. There’s something incredibly romantic about waking up surrounded by water, with the Malvern Hills visible in the distance on clear days.
The Floating Home Experience
The apartment itself feels more like a well-appointed cottage that just happens to float. The kitchen is fully equipped — I was impressed by how functional everything is despite the compact space. The room layouts make clever use of every inch, and you never feel cramped. What I loved most was the outdoor deck area where you can sit with your morning coffee and watch the world wake up over the lake. The gentle rocking motion takes some getting used to, but honestly, it becomes quite soothing after the first night.
Local Area & Activities
Upton-upon-Severn village is just a short walk away, and it’s one of those quintessentially English spots that feels untouched by time. The local pub serves decent food, and there’s a small shop for essentials. If you’re into walking, the riverside paths are lovely — you can follow the Severn Way for miles in either direction. I actually spent hours just watching the wildlife from the boat; herons are regular visitors, and the birdlife is incredible at dawn and dusk. The whole area feels wonderfully removed from busy tourist trails.
Why Guests Love It
The 9.1 rating really reflects what makes this place work — it’s the combination of novelty and genuine comfort. You’re not roughing it on some basic boat; this is proper accommodation that happens to float. The peace and quiet are extraordinary, especially if you’re coming from city life. I think what guests appreciate most is how the experience feels both adventurous and relaxing at the same time. The hosts clearly know what they’re doing, and the whole operation runs smoothly. It’s the sort of place where you find yourself planning your next visit before you’ve even left.

Stunning location on the lake - such a gorgeous spot for a girls weekend away to catch up. We loved sitting outside on the decking with a drink watching the ducks and all the other wildlife! Even a heron and a kingfisher!
