Aberdunant Hall Holiday Park

HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know what caught me off guard about Aberdunant Hall Holiday Park? The name completely undersells what this place actually is. I mean, “holiday park” makes you think of static caravans and coin-operated showers, but honestly – this is more like stumbling across someone’s well-kept secret in the Welsh countryside. The location alone is pretty spectacular, tucked away in Prenteg just outside Porthmadog, where you get those proper mountain views without the tourist crowds that swarm Betws-y-Coed or Llanberis.

The drive up can be a bit narrow (typical Welsh lanes, you know the drill), but once you’re there, it feels like you’ve found something special. What strikes me most is how they’ve managed to keep that boutique feel – no official star rating, which actually works in their favor because they’re not trying to fit into some generic hotel box. The accommodations have character, and I don’t mean that in the estate agent way where “character” means dodgy plumbing. I’m talking about thoughtful touches that make you feel like you’re staying somewhere that actually cares about the experience. The beds are proper comfortable, and there’s this attention to detail that you just don’t get at chain places.

Location-wise, you’re perfectly positioned for exploring Snowdonia without being stuck in the middle of it all. Porthmadog’s just down the road – great for grabbing supplies or catching the Ffestiniog Railway if you’re into that sort of thing. The coastal path to Criccieth is gorgeous on a clear day, and you can actually get to some of the better hiking spots without battling through the usual tourist traffic on the A470. Parking’s never been an issue when I’ve been there, which is honestly a relief after trying to find a space in some of the more popular Welsh towns. The surrounding area goes properly quiet in the evenings too – you get that countryside stillness that’s becoming harder to find. Sometimes you’ll hear the distant sound of the steam trains, but it’s more charming than disruptive.

What really sells this place for me is that 9.1 rating, and having stayed there, I can see why people rate it so highly. It’s one of those places where the owners clearly know what they’re doing – the kind of hospitality that feels genuine rather than scripted. The whole setup strikes that perfect balance between being comfortable and not feeling overly polished or sterile. Whether you’re using it as a base for hiking, exploring the coast, or just wanting to properly switch off for a few days, it delivers without trying too hard. Plus, being slightly off the beaten track means you avoid the worst of the summer crowds, but you’re still close enough to all the good stuff when you want it.
